Transition Year

Transition Year (TY) is a one-year programme taken after the Junior Cycle and before the Senior Cycle. It provides students with a unique opportunity to mature personally, socially, and educationally.  TY empowers students to explore their interests, develop life skills, and prepare for adult life in a dynamic and supportive environment.

Our TY Programme - Pobalscoil Iosolde

Our Transition Year programme is built in accordance with the 2024 Transition Year Programme Statement, which emphasises:

  • Student-centred learning that values experience, exploration, and engagement.

  • Broad educational experience beyond academic subjects, focusing on creativity, enterprise, and community.

  • Flexible and varied approaches to learning through project work, enterprise activities, placements, and more.

The Four Dimensions of the Student

Our TY Programme nurtures the student across four key dimensions:

1. The Student as a Person

  • Emphasis on wellbeing, confidence, and self-awareness.

  • Programmes in mental health, personal development, and lifestyle skills.

  • Activities such as Gaisce, retreats, and team-building days.

2. The Student as a Learner

  • Development of critical thinking, problem-solving, and independent learning.

  • Opportunities to explore subjects in new ways, often using cross-curricular or project-based methods.

  • Exposure to new learning areas such as media studies, IT, philosophy, and environmental science.

3. The Student as a Citizen

  • Involvement in volunteering, social justice, and community initiatives.

  • Awareness of local and global issues through workshops and campaigns.

  • Participation in student voice, TY leadership teams, and civic education.

4. The Student as a Worker

  • Work experience placements with local businesses, services, or voluntary organisations.
